Ontario confirms restricted fire zone and travel ban to be lifted

    August 20, 2026

THUNDER BAY, Ontario / RankWire.AI / — Emergency forestry restrictions across Northwestern Ontario ended early Thursday after widespread rainfall significantly reduced active wildfire hazards. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, the regional restricted fire zone and accompanying backcountry travel ban were officially revoked at 12:01 a.m. The decision terminates weeks of strict outdoor burning prohibitions enforced across the Northwest Region to prevent wildland fire ignitions.

Ontario confirms restricted fire zone and travel ban to be lifted
Highway maintenance crews clear public roadways to restore regional transit and emergency access.

Provincial fire management officials stated that valid burning permits are officially reinstated, permitting outdoor campfires, recreational burning, and fireworks displays under standard safety regulations. Municipal authorities in Thunder Bay announced that local fire bans would similarly end at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, while reminding residents that valid municipal permits remain mandatory for open-air burning. Public safety agencies attributed the lifting of restrictions to cool weather patterns and widespread rain that significantly reduced active fuel loads.

Restricted Fire Zone and Travel Ban to be Lifted Across Northwestern Ontario

In parallel with the burning restriction termination, emergency management coordinators revoked localized access restrictions in the Armstrong and Whitesand First Nation sectors. Municipal transportation agencies confirmed that key regional thoroughfares, including Highway 527 and Highway 811, were fully reopened to civilian traffic. The reopening allows displaced residents to return to their properties while restoring routine commercial logistics and recreational access across primary road networks.

Provincial tracking systems operated by Ontario Forest Fires confirmed that implementation orders around major fire complexes, including Thunder Bay 36 and Dryden 34, were revoked at 9:00 a.m. Thursday. Regional evacuation alerts previously affecting the Fort Frances 39 district near the United States border were also rescinded after public safety assessments concluded that active suppression efforts successfully contained perimeter threats.

Regional Restricted Fire Zone Restrictions Revoked Effective Thursday Morning

Despite the lifting of regional bans, provincial fire officials emphasized that wildland fire suppression crews remain active on remaining remote blazes. Emergency personnel cautioned that while public safety risks have subsided, citizens must exercise caution when lighting fires on dry ground. Environmental monitoring groups will continue tracking relative humidity levels and lightning activity to adjust regional hazard ratings across the remainder of the summer fire season.

Community leadership across affected northern municipalities welcomed the rescinding of emergency orders, noting that restored access provides critical support to local outfitters and tourism operators. The provincial government expressed gratitude to residents and visitors for adhering to emergency restrictions during peak danger periods. As the restricted fire zone and travel ban to be lifted measures take full effect, authorities urge all outdoor recreationists to remain compliant with provincial fire regulations.
